Reflection Paper #1

When I first received the e-mail containing the questionnaire for this class I was a little concerned that the content was going to be remedial. I figured that I had already taken Introduction to Computer Sciences at Dominican University my freshman year and there was not much more to learn. What else is there to computers other than the typical Microsoft programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access? After I first class, I realized how wrong my preconceptions were regarding Integrating Technology into the Curriculum. I never thought of all the different websites that could be beneficial within the classroom. I knew BBC and Nova had websites but I never explored the vast information they contained. Nor did I ever realize how many educational games the websites provided that could make learning more engaging for my students.
I was astounded by the websites we discussed, such as Google Books, which has entire books online to download for free. I never realized that I could take an internet course at Harvard University for free. I never expected to create my own blog or wiki. I knew that these sites existed, but I never envisioned myself creating one personally! I really liked the idea of creating a social book marking site and enjoy looking at the popular sites other teachers are bookmarking for safe keeping. I found this site so valuable that I even made my mom an account.
Since our first class, I stopped using only Google and I now enjoy using Dogpile to conduct my internet searches. I am enjoying learning how to create an e-sheet because I am sure this is something I will be using as a future teacher. I look forward to learning how to use RefWorks to make citing my papers according to APA guidelines a little bit easier. I also want to learn about creating Pathfinders. I found the journal article assignment to be extremely interesting and I look forward to learning more about different ways to incorporate technological advancements into my classroom!
